“Time for a snack Vol.2”

2022/8/27(sat)〜10/2(sun) 12:00〜18:00

Closed Monday,Tuesday

今回の木戸涼子の個展『Time for a snack Vol.2』は、前回2018年のKido Pressでの個展『# おやつのじかん/# time for a snack』の第二弾というべき作品群である。

“tenkomori”

Exhibition by Ryoko Kido: Time for a Snack, Vol. 2
Period: August 27 (Sat.) - October 2 (Sun.), 2022
Gallery hours: 12:00 - 18:00
Exhibition days: Wednesday - Sunday (closed on Monday and Tuesday)
Venue: Gallery KIDO Press (3331 Arts Chiyoda #204)
As suggested by its title, Time for a Snack, Vol. 2, this latest solo exhibition of works by Ryoko Kido may be considered a sequel to #time for a snack, the previous solo exhibition she held at Gallery KIDO Press in 2018. As a dedicated devotee of sweets who also loves to eat, Kido follows her paintings of ice cream, shaved ice, and cupcakes in the last exhibition with depictions of pudding a la mode, jelly, and even a big mound of rice topped by a pickled plum in this one. The exhibition surely calls for an in-depth interpretation that goes beyond her plain characterization of it as “again treating motifs with a focus on familiar things and my everyday life.”

Ryoko Kido has steadily continued to produce paintings ever since her graduation from a university of the arts. Until just a few years ago, she was compelled to balance her artistic activities with her duties as a mother for much of the time. As a result (which may be an excessively superficial way of putting it), the paintings in the two solo exhibitions she held in 2009 (The Gaze of Spring) and 2012 (Rain After Smile) seemed to ooze softness, magnanimity, and warmth that mesh with associations of the word “mother.”

The picture changed greatly with #time for a snack, her last solo exhibition held in 2018. In spite of the casual, pleasing connotations of the word “snack,” the sweet delights portrayed on the canvas radiated a staunch self-assertion. Instilled with a massiveness by the classical technique of tempera, the confections projected a strong presence, as if they were triumphantly thrusting a fist in the air before the faces of the viewers and demanding their recognition. Kido painted a warm and gentle world proceeding from her days of interaction with her children, and perhaps the figurative fist belongs to her, now that her child-raising days are over and she has finally gotten herself in a position allowing her to face her own ego 100 percent. When her transition is viewed in this light, one can see that this exhibition of works again made in tempera and on the same theme is a further exploration of her own self. Hovering pieces of Apollo Chocolate, slices of apple cutting through the air, chunks of caramel squeezing out of aluminum-foil wrappers… The treats rendered by Kido in meticulous detail positively wallop viewers who are unprepared for them. Her mountain of rice seems to eclipse this world. Those who come to the exhibition are advised not to be fooled by the title Time for a Snack, which is ordinarily an invitation to a relaxing break, and to get themselves ready for a confrontation with Kido’s ego.

〈Comment by the artist〉

I still love sweets. I keep some on my desk and carry some in my handbag.
I paint the familiar shapes that are dear to my heart and the pleasure I derive from eating sweets.
I try to produce paintings that are not mere depictions of the actual subjects.
Gallery KIDO Press is pleased to be holding Time for a Snack, Vol. 2, Ryoko Kido’s first solo exhibition here in four years.
Please don’t miss this opportunity to see paintings she made applying the classic tempera technique.
About tempera paintings

Tempera is a classical technique of Western-style painting that preceded oil painting and uses the emulsifying action of egg yolk.
The technique enables fine depictions in the process of painting because the pigments are water-soluble. The pigments also dry quickly and yield brilliant coloring.
Use of tempera in combination with transparent oil paints widens the range of expression.
