Taku Obata has come to the fore in various countries in recent years for his "b-boy" and "buttai" art. Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold a second exhibition of his lithographs titled "Norithograph 2" and a concurrent exhibition of his monotypes titled "MONOTYPES."

For "Norithograph 2," Obata produced lithographs using the traditional stone slab. Drawing while feeling the overwhelming resistance offered by stone, he achieves a free expression while preserving the sense of depth unique to sculptors, who feel the mass of the material as they work it.

It may also be noted that lithography is characterized by its capability for exceedingly complex depiction with a rich palette of shades and overlapping colors. Obata made full use of these traits to create the kind of images which are his forte with even greater depth and intensity.

A contrast is provided by his production of monotypes, which consist of only one print each, as the name indicates. It is based on the full-surface printing of images extemporaneously drawn on the plate, applying the powerful pressure exerted by an etching press.

Obata's uninhibited art recognizes no limits due to the technical constraints of printing, and transports us to a world of thrills and inspiration.

Artist's comment I am going to hold a solo exhibition titled "Norithograph 2" at KIDO Press for the first time in four years.
In 2016, "Norithograph" was held at KIDO Press as an experimental solo exhibition of lithographs made with an emphasis on "nori," the Japanese word for "beat." It was the first time for me to show a variety of different works, i.e., drawings made in an impromptu way as opposed to wooden carvings produced systematically; sculptures made of clay molded by hand, like drawings, that I fired outside or in a glost kiln to turn into ceramic; and prototypal works of my "buttai" series of gravity objects made by printing patterns of actual-size carved apparel on clay, followed by drying and coloring.

"Norithograph 2" and "MONOTYPE" present everything from lithographs that are extensions of the sketches for the sculptures in the previous exhibition and abstract lithographs to a series of monotypes that go farther than those I made when I first encountered monotyping for an exhibition in Bristol (UK) last year. The latter include monotypes that I simply printed as they were, monotypes printed after drawing on the ground, and monotypes on which I drew after they were printed.

While these will be additional solo exhibitions of mine, I am going to show flat works with a texture differing completely from the canvases in my recent solo exhibition at PARCEL and the silkscreen prints in my Part 3 exhibition at Akio Nagasawa Gallery.

I earnestly hope you will take this opportunity to visit Gallery KIDO Press and see lithographs and monotypes made by a sculptor!

Explanation of terms

* Lithography: A technique for printing drawings made on a flat plate surface, based on scientific platemaking. It enables printing of any number of copies.
