“Cave M.S”

From January 11 (Sat.) to February 16 (Sun.), 2020, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "Kyoko Suematsu: Mogumogu to Kunkun." This exhibition will display works that take the olfactory sense (scents) and gustatory sense (tastes) as their theme. Adopting the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch) themselves as her concept, Suematsu has thus far produced flat visualizations of sensations, which are inherently nebulous entities, and created a series of icons with vivid transparent colors. Her unique sensibility has captivated not only art lovers but also the contemporary artist Tabaimo. In 2012, works she produced in collaboration with Tabaimo were displayed in the show windows of Dior Ginza as part of an exhibit, supervised by the latter, to celebrate the renovation and reopening of the store. Expectations of her future activities are running high. This exhibition will display 10 works on the theme of the olfactory sense (scents) and 12 on that of the gustatory sense (tastes), for a total of 22.

The scent and taste works to be shown at this exhibition are characterized by mutually different methods of production. The scent series consists of works painted with acrylic pigments on fabric. For them, Suematsu, who majored in dressmaking in her high school days, used not canvas, which is the ordinary support for paintings, but cotton and linen, which are commonly used to make apparel, and finely tuned the seepage of pigments into them. In addition, because of the vague nature of scent, whose mental image constantly changes, she limited the production time to one hour in order to best reproduce the initial inspiration and impression upon first whiff. Under this constraint, she extracted aromatic constituents numbering up to 50, and used them to bring forth icons of these fresh images. They awaken memories of the fragrances of roses in parks we played in as children and around grandmother's dressing table. Suematsu consequently called scents the "keys" that open the doors of memory, assigned numbers to the scents, and appended these to the titles of the works, as if for sampling. Produced through a process that, while sensory, is also systematic, the works are endowed with an ephemeral yet solid presence. They stand out before our eyes.

The "taste" series is a first for Suematsu. The works were made by dripping colorful wax on supports made of synthetic cotton sewn into a quilt core. Suematsu says that the appearance of the drops of wax melting into the cotton calls to mind the passage of food molecules and ions over the taste buds, i.e., the minute organs on the human tongue governing gustation. The act of seeking flavor in the mouth is also akin to groping in the darkness of a cave, and this is the reason for the choice of this word as the title for the series. The way in which the colorful wax with a pop flair is layered on the cotton gives these flat works a beauty associated with the technical arts.

The senses of smell and taste are closely intertwined and have a mutual resemblance. We earnestly hope you will come to see this exhibition showcasing the unique vision and technique of Suematsu as she focuses on these two senses.
