『The Red Shoe』
ギャラリーキドプレスでは、2019年10月5日(土)から11月10日(日)まで、ニューヨーク在住の画家ジョン・カリンの版画を紹介する『ジョン・カリン 版画展』を開催いたします。
ジョン・カリンは、何百年にも渡り脈々と流れる絵画史を熟知し巧みに更新するかのように、古典的な絵画特有の技法を用いて、現代社会で論争を招くような性的タブーな肖像画を描くことで知られています。美しさとグロテクスの完璧な均衡を探求するカリンは、戦略的に現代画家として油彩の具象画を描き続け、今日においては現代美術を語る上で欠かすことのできないアメリカを代表する画家です。
このカリンの画業における革新性は、版画制作を通じても見ることができます。というのも通常、多くの画家はドローイングないしはペインティングを完成させてから版画に取り掛かり、その版画制作の工程で、元となる自身のドローイング又はペインティングの制作過程を振り返り検証していきます。対してカリンの場合は、その真逆の発想で版画制作に取り組みます。つまり、版画作品を仕上げた後に、ペインティング、ドローイングを制作するのです。先ず、版画を作ることによって、油絵を制作するための頭を整理し効率を上げていきます。
本展では、このようなカリン独自の版画と油絵の関係性が顕著に現れた版画作品7点を、日本で初公開いたします。出品作品は2〜3年の月日を費やしKIDO Pressで制作され2016年に出版されました。その後、これらの版画作品に呼応する油絵作品を発表しています。
カリンと言えば、妻レイチェルをモデルとした作品のほか、巨匠画家の肖像画、B級映画、インターネットのポルノ画像、ピンナップの妖艶なポーズなどから着想された女性像が多く描かれてきました。しかし、近年ではポルノグラフィのコンテクストから離れ、静物画を彷彿とさせるかのように食べ物やそのほか様々な象徴として物をランダムに出現させ、例えばデパートのカタログにあるような空虚な笑顔の夫婦像を不調和の余韻を残し描き出しています。
今回展示される版画作品「Newspaper Couple」もまた、一見すると、食卓で新聞紙を読もうとする夫に寄り添う妻という円満で成熟した老夫婦像が描かれる一方で、夫婦の頭上には腐りつつあるバナナや溶け出したロウソク、背後にはカラスも描かれどこか不気味でもあるのです。同時に、頭上に様々な物を乗せながら笑顔で居続けるその夫婦の姿はどこか滑稽でもありポップな息吹をも感じさせます。カリンはこの伝統とポップを融合させた肖像を、エッチングを用いて細部にまで綿密に線を描刻し、アクアチントにより精密に階調を何層もつくりモノトーンの美しい濃淡で仕上げました。対応する油絵では表現され尽くさなかった、夫人がつける指輪の小さく光る宝石までも描き込み、その細部への鑑賞者の視線の誘導は、私たちに版画を観ることの醍醐味を改めて教えてくれているかのようです。また、「Turbanetta」ではカリンにとって初となるメゾチントと雁皮紙刷りも試みられ、モノトーンでありながらも多彩な世界観が広がります。
本展の画家ジョン・カリンの版画作品を通して、カリンが切り拓いた現代版画における可能性を是非ご堪能頂けましたら幸いです。

From October 5 (Sat.) to November 10 (Sun.), 2019, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "John Currin Prints" who resides in New York.
John Currin is known for his portraits that challenge sexual taboos and stir controversy in contemporary society. He has a thorough knowledge of the history of painting spanning many centuries and applies techniques distinctive to classical painting in a manner that is apparently aimed at deftly updating it. Pursuing the perfect balance between the beautiful and the grotesque, Currin has strategically continued to produce representational oil paintings as a contemporary artist. In the process, he has emerged as one of America's leading painters whom any discussion today of contemporary art cannot afford to ignore.
This innovative character of Currin's art can also be seen in his production of prints. Many artists ordinarily make prints after completing the drawing or painting.
Besides works using his wife Rachel as a model, Currin is known for his many paintings of women inspired by portraits by old masters, B-movies, Internet porn, and pin-up girls in voluptuous poses. In recent years, however, he has departed from pornographic contexts and begun painting apparently random assortments of objects symbolic of food and various other things, in the style of still life paintings. One painting, for example, depicts a couple wearing vacuous smiles like those in photos in department store catalogues, and leaves an impression of disharmony.
"Newspaper Couple," one of the prints to be shown at this exhibition, likewise depicts what appears to be an aging and loving couple. The wife draws close to the husband, who is trying to read the newspaper at the dinner table. But closer inspection reveals some unsettling elements, such as a rotting banana, candles with melting wax, and other objects perched on their heads, and a raven behind them. At the same time, the way in which the two keep smiling in spite of having various items on their heads is somehow comic, and also adds a pop flair. For this portrait fusing tradition and pop, Currin used edging to etch lines extending to minute particulars. He then precisely applied layer after layer of tones using aquatint, and achieved a monotone finish with beautiful gradation. He also included details that were not completely rendered in the corresponding oil painting, such as the sparkling little diamond of the wife's wedding ring. The work leads the viewer's eyes to these fine points, and thereby impresses us all over again with the joys of scrutinizing prints.
While monotone, "Turbanetta" rolls out a whole variegated world of its own, and also represents Currin's first attempt at combining mezzotint and printing on ganpishi (paper made from the fiber of the ganpi plant).
The possibilities opened up by Currin in contemporary printmaking through this exhibition of his prints are definitely not to be missed!
