ギャラリーキドプレスでは、2018 年 9 月 7 日(金) から 10 月 14 日(日)まで、パリを拠点に国際的に活 躍する写真家、オノデラユキによる版画作品と写真 作品を紹介する『オノデラユキ - 窓という装置を めぐって』展を開催いたします。本展では、キドプ レスにて 2009 年に制作されたフォトグラビュー ルの版画作品「古着のポートレート」(2009 年)の 5点とともに、これまであまり発表されてこなかっ た小作品のゼラチン・シルバー・プリント(銀塩写 真)の中から《窓》に関わる作品を、オノデラ自身 が厳選した写真作品 12 点を一堂に展示いたします。
版画作品「古着のポートレート」は、1994 年に制作 されたオノデラの初期の代表作「古着のポートレート」 をフォトグラビュールによって新たに表現した作品 です。光を利用して版を刻むフォトグラビュールは、 光の画としての写真表現と親和性が高い銅版画の技 法の一つです。全工程が手作業から成り、明暗を無段 階に階調することができるので、写真フィルムよりも さらに深く表現可能な特徴をもっているとも言われ ます。
オノデラはこのフォトグラビュールを用いて制作し た「古着のポートレート」に、写真による硬質な描写 力とは違う方向性を見いだし、手応えのあるマチエー ルを伴った絵画としての強度と存在感を浮き彫りに しました。また、精妙な手仕事のニュアンスの形跡を留めるフォトグラビュールこそが、デジタルプリントがスタンダード化する現代において、極めて貴重かつ魅力的な 技法であることを物語っています。光沢感のある上質なブルーグレーの雁皮紙に二色のインクで刷られることによっ て、独特の温かく繊細なマチエールが生まれ、作品の内に秘められた絵画的内容がより表に出てくるような仕上がり を是非ご堪能ください。

また、今回展示される写真作品は、過去のシリーズ から数点ずつ、モンマルトルの空を背景に約 50 点 の古着を窓辺に 1 点ずつ立たせて撮影した「古着の ポートレート」(1994 年)を起因として、様々な意 味合いを想起させる《窓》をテーマに選出されてい ます。
「古着のポートレート」に至る経路上にあり第 1 回〈写真新世紀〉(1991 年)の受賞作品でもある シリーズ「君が走っているのだ。僕はダンボの耳で 待つ」(1991 年)、古着の袖から空を垣間見た「From the Sleeve」(1993 年)、美しい青い色調の「窓とコ ップ/Window and Glass」(1993 年)、古着のポートレートと同じモンマルトルのアパルトマンの窓辺で撮影されたシリーズ「鳥」(1994 年)、オノデラユキとアキルミ のユニットプロジェクト Les KiKi による永遠のパリを描くシリーズ「レ・キキのパリ/Les KiKi de Paris」(1996 年)、 東京郊外の家々を浮遊する光の箱のように捉えた作品シリーズ「窓の外を見よ」(2000 年)、中心に明るい大きな窓が ある部屋に世界各地の地名を標識のオブジェが配置されたシリーズ「世界は小さくない-1826」(2012 年)という7つ のシリーズから、今回は《窓》に関わる作品としてオノデラにより編集されることで、当展示に出品される写真はシ リーズという枠組みから解放され、新たな側面を見出す可能性に満ちた内容にもなります。そして《窓》はそのとき、 部屋の窓、窓辺、カメラという箱の窓、あるいは写真のフレーム、もしくは写真という枠組みそのものであるのかも しれません。制作の現場でもある版画工房のギャラリースペースだからこそ実現した試作的な展示内容を、オノデラ の写真作品に内在する多様な視覚表現と思考の痕跡を辿りながら、そのオノデラの窓からも飛び出し想像の翼を羽ば たかせるようにお楽しみいただけましたら幸いです。

＜オノデラ ユキプロフィール＞
1962 年東京生まれ。1993 年よりパリにアトリエを構え世界各地で活動を続ける。その作品は国内の美術館はもとよ り、パリのポンピドゥー・センターを始め、国立上海美術館、サンフランシスコ美術館、ポール・ゲティ美術館など 世界各地の美術館に数多くコレクションされています。

From September 7 (Fri.) to October 14 (Sun.), 2018, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "Yuki Onodera - The Window as Device." This exhibition will introduce both printed works and photographs by Yuki Onodera, an internationally renowned photographer based in Paris. Besides five works from the "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes" series of photogravure prints made at Kido Press in 2009, it will show 12 window-related photographs carefully picked by Onodera herself from a group of small gelatin-silver prints (silver-halide photos) that have not been extensively shown so far.

Onodera produced the prints titled "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes" by making photogravures of works from the series of photographs bearing the same title, which debuted in 1994 and constitute a signature opus from the early part of her career. Using light to engrave the plate, photogravure is a type of copperplate printing and has a high affinity with photography, another form of expression using light. The entire process is performed by hand, and brightness can be adjusted without any gradation steps. This is why photogravure is also said to enable expression with more depth than even photographic film.

For the "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes" works produced by photogravure, Onodera discovered a direction differing from the hard depictions of photography, and threw into sharp relief their strength and presence as pictures accompanied by responsive “matie`re." Furthermore, the works testify that it is photogravure which must be counted as an exceedingly precious and captivating technique especially today, when digital prints have become the standard, as it leaves behind the nuanced marks of subtle handiwork. Onodera created a delicate “matie`re” with a distinctive warmth by printing in two colors of ink on fine blue-grey "ganpishi" (a traditional Japanese type of thin paper made with fibers taken from the bark of a clove-like bush) with a glossy look. Visitors are encouraged to scrutinize and savor the results of the finished process, which better brings out the pictorial content that had been hidden in the pieces.

The photographic works to be shown in this exhibition are comprised of a few from each of several past series. They were selected on the basis of a thematic connection with "windows," which are associated with various facets of meaning and harken back particularly to Onodera's "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes" (1994). For this series, she photographed about 50 articles of clothing as if they were floating outside her window, one at a time, against the skies of Montmartre.

The window-related photographs selected for this exhibition by Onodera derive from a total of seven series: "You are Running. I'm Waiting with Ears Like Dumbo's" (1991), which may be positioned on the path leading to "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes" and took the first New Cosmos of Photography award in the same year; "From the Sleeve" (1993), for which she shot the sky through the sleeves of second-hand clothes; "Window and Glass" (1993) with its beautiful bluish tones; "Birds" (1994), a series photographed from the window of her apartment in Montmartre, like the "Portrait of Second-hand Clothes"; "Les KiKi de Paris" (1996), a series portraying the eternal Paris by Les KiKi, a unit project of Onodera and Aki Lumi; "Look Out the Window" (2000), a series depicting houses in suburban Tokyo as if they were boxes of light floating in the air; and "The World is not Small - 1826" (2012), in which objects bearing the names of places from around the world are arrayed in a room, with a big window in the middle letting in ample sunlight. Freed from the series framework, these photos are rich in possibilities for discovering new dimensions in them. And in such exploration, the "window" may be that in a room, the area beside a window, the camera as a box with a window, the frame of a photo, and perhaps even the framework of photography itself. With its experimental nature, this exhibition could be realized only at Kido Press, the gallery space of the printing studio that was also the site of production. Through it, we hope that visitors will delight in retracing the trajectory of the diverse visual presentations and thought animating Onodera's photographic works, and letting their imagination take wing and fly out of even her "windows”.

We urge all to see Onodera's diverse world as glimpsed through the prints and photographs at this exhibition.

Profile of Yuki Onodera
Born in Tokyo in 1962, Yuki Onodera planted her studio in Paris in 1993 and has since remained internationally active. Her works have found their way into the collections of not only art museums in Japan but also many other ones in other countries, including the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Shanghai Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
