ギャラリーキドプレスでは、2018年7月21日(土)から9月2日(日)まで、キドプレスで版画を制作した木彫作家3名による版画作品を紹介する、『視点が変わるとき-When We change Our Perspective』展を開催いたします。
 本質はそのままに立体から平面へと移り変わる様を見る側におけるperspective(視点・視野・角度)の変化と捉え、木彫から版画への変様がもたらす意味をあらためて見出そうという試みです。
本展ではキドプレスにて、2013年と17年の2度に渡って〈銅版画〉を集中制作した舟越桂氏(1951年生)、2014年に自身初となる〈石版画〉を制作した三沢厚彦氏(1961年生)、そして2016年に〈リトグラフ〉作品を発表した若手作家の小畑多丘氏(1980年生)、これら3作家の版画作品計11点を、世代を越えて一堂に展示します。
 黒の技法と訳され、漆黒で一面に覆われた真っ黒な画面から鋭利な刃物を使い白く線を抜いていく、メゾチントの技法を用いて制作された舟越氏の銅版画は、普通の画材では描くことができない、暗闇から光を引き出すような黒から白へと移ろう豊かなハーフトーンと鋭い黒描線を出現させながら、代表作の《スフィンクス》シリーズをはじめとした人間の姿を形作り、観るものを魅了します。
一方、「版画はスタジオで楽曲を収録していく作業にに似ている」と語る三沢氏は、《ANIMALS》シリーズより熊をモチーフに、綿密で自由の高い表現が可能な石版画によって幾重にも筆跡や色彩を重ね、まるで一つの楽曲を紡ぎ上げいくかのように作品世界に奥行きと深みを与えています。
《B-Boy》木彫で知られる小畑氏は、木彫では表現することができないノリ重視のB-Boyドローイングを描きリトグラフを制作しました。ビビッドな色彩だけなくオフメタルシルバーの紙に刷ることで更にヒップな演出を施しています。
《スフィンクス》、《ANIMALS》、《B-Boy》、それらのイメージが立体と平面を行き交うとき、私たちはそこに何を観ることができるのでしょうか。3名の木彫作家による三者三様の版画へのアプローチをご覧いただきながら、木彫と版画の関係性を探るとともに、彫刻家による版画表現の世界観を是非お楽しみいただけましたら幸いです。

From July 21 (Sat.) to September 2 (Sun.), 2018, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "When We Change Our Perspective." This exhibition will display printed works made at Kido Press by three sculptors.
Regarding the transposition from a three-dimensional presentation to a two-dimensional one with the substance unaltered as a change of perspective on the side of the viewer, this exhibition is another attempt to explore the meaning engendered by a move from carving to printing. It brings together a total of 11 printed works that were made at Kido Press by three artists of different generations: Katsura Funakoshi (born in 1951), who engaged in intensive production of copperplate intaglio prints at Kido Press twice, in 2013 and 2017; Atsuhiko Misawa (born in 1961), who produced his first lithographs ever in 2014; and Taku Obata (born in 1980), whose lithographs were made in 2016.
Funakoshi's intaglios are produced by the mezzotint technique. Termed "manie`re noire" (literally "black technique") in French, mezzotint involves the use of a sharp, bladed instrument to incise white lines on the jet-black surface of the inked print. It results in rich gradations of half-tones from black to white that seem to draw light out of the darkness and sharp black lines, all of which could not be achieved with ordinary art materials. In his acclaimed "Sphinx" series and other works, Funakoshi depicts human forms that beguile the viewer.

Asserting that printmaking resembles the process of recording music in a studio, Misawa chose to print by lithography, which enables fine expression and offers a high degree of freedom, for works from his "Animals" series taking bears as their motif. By applying layer after layer of drawings and colors, he adds profundity and depth to the world of his art, exactly as if composing and mixing pieces of music.

Known for his "B-Boy" wooden sculptures, Obata produced lithographs from b-boy drawings with a stress on "nori" (beat) that could not be achieved by carving. The hip-hop flair is accented by the use of off-metal silver paper for printing as well as by the vivid coloration.

What can we discern in the migration of "Sphinx," "Animals," and "B-Boy" images between sculptures and flats? We strongly urge visitors to examine the relationship between carvings and prints by seeing the different approaches to printing taken by the three artists usually making wooden sculptures, and are sure you will enjoy experiencing the world views manifested in works of printed art made by sculptors.
