『 Implosion − Body、and Stars − 』Exhibition
May 5 (Sat.) - June 10 (Sun .), 2018
Venue: Gallery KIDO Press (3331 Arts Chiyoda 204)

To commemorate the release of "Catchers I-IV," a new series of prints by contemporary artist Kiki Smith, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "Kiki Smith: Implosion - Body, and Stars" from May 5 (Sat.) to June 10 (Sun.). .

One of America's major female artists, Kiki Smith came to prominence in the 1980s for her sculptures bound up with corporeality and feminism, and cannot be overlooked in any discussion of contemporary art. At the same time, production of prints has occupied an important position in her activities of artistic creation. From 2003 to 2004, the New York Museum of Modern Art Queens (MoMA QNS) held a large exhibit titled "Kiki Smith: Prints, Books, and Things" that showcased her as an innovative printer. As this evidences, she has also established a solid position for herself in the genre of printing. Besides promptly presenting "Catchers I-IV," an important series of four prints that were just produced in April 2018, to Japanese art lovers, this exhibition displays "Puppetry," a series of five prints made at KIDO Press in 2012, and two milestone works created by the artist at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in the 1990s, namely "Kiki Smith 1993" (1993) and "Worm" (1992). "The 'Catchers' pieces were made as small performances of hands grasping one another. There is a star engraved on each joint, creating a constellation made by chance, where they intersect. 'Puppetry' (prints) also are moments of small performances." Kiki Smith, 2018

"The 'Catchers' pieces were made as small performances of hands grasping one another. There is a star engraved on each joint, creating a constellation made by chance, where they intersect. 'Puppetry' (prints) also are moments of small performances."  - Kiki Smith, 2018

For the new "Catchers" series (2018), Smith applied photogravure and used light to engrave the image of a manual drawing of two hands on the plate. She originally depicted her two hands on acrylic plate in order to produce cyanotypes (blueprints) and contact prints, and subsequently got the idea of making such works with photopolymers. It was through this process that she arrived at the production of these prints. Taking full advantage of the properties of engraving, which leaves strong lines with a precise and tense sharpness, the star-like marks virtually sparkle with beauty. "Catchers" is definitely a refined series of contemporary prints grounded in the careful selection and deft application of printing and photogravure techniques by an artist versed in them. .

In the print series "Puppetry" (2012), for which Smith utilized photopolymer plates, there is an interesting visual noise that arose along with spontaneous happenings in the printing process. Smith herself has mentioned her fondness for this feature. When producing the series, Smith offered the following comment: "An automaton moves or rather is moved by some sort of magical power or other supernatural force. To deliberately suggest this, I titled the series 'Puppetry'." In contrast to the monochromatic "Catchers" series, "Puppetry" features vividly colored motifs, based on collages and photographs, that resonate with the body parts cut out from the artist's perspective. Works from this series will be on hand for exhibition visitors to admire.

Also at the exhibition will be two major works of Smith's dating from the 1990s: "Kiki Smith 1993" (1993) and "Worm" (1992). Measuring 185 by 93 centimeters, the former took the artist's own digestive tract as its subject and was printed on handmade "washi" paper, which is said to resemble human skin. The latter is a landmark print whose key elements are a photographic self-portrait and a paper-craft dimension. It is being shown to the public in Japan for the first time since its display at the exhibition titled "40 Years of Contemporary American Printing - Giants and the ULAE Print Studio" (at Sezon Museum of Art) about 20 years ago. Its showing in the KIDO Gallery is therefore a precious opportunity for all concerned.

"It’s about repetition versus uniqueness. My interest in printmaking is that prints mimic what we are as humans: we are all the same and yet everyone is different." - Kiki Smith, 1998 We hope you will come to this exhibit for a firsthand look at all the possibilities of contemporary printing through the works of Kiki Smith.
