ギャラリー キドプレスでは、2017年4月28日より5月28日まで、テリー・ウィンタース「Fourteen Etchings」展を開催いたします。
1949年生まれのテリー・ウィンタースはニューヨークのPratt Institute卒業後ニューヨークを拠点として制作を続けている作家です。
初期の作品はミニマリズムのモノクロ表現の影響が感じられますが、次第に主題となる生物学的、天文学的なモチーフが有機的な形となって表現されています。
Fourteen Etchings は、1989年にULAEより刊行された14点の銅版画からなる版画集の名作です。
それぞれ14点からなる作品は、19世紀のドイツの解剖学書から引用した人体の骨格のX線写真とダイレクトグラビュールをベースとした銅版画を組み合わせて作られています。
X線写真は、頭部から始まりページが進むごとに胸部、腕部、腹部、腰部と身体の下部に進み最後に足部となります。
銅版画のそれぞれのイメージは、必ずしもX線写真と直接的に関わるものではありませんが、抽象的なイメージと具体的なＸ線写真を同一画面上で視覚することによって、ある種の有機的な感覚が不思議と呼び起こされます。
限りなく静謐でありながら豊かな感性の上に象られた作品です。
またこの機会に、2005年の来日の時に制作した、和紙に刷られたリトグラフ、Compositeも展示いたします。

B. 1949 Terry Winters attended the High School of Art and Design in New York, and received a BFA from the Pratt Institute (1971).
His early paintings were influenced by the monochromatic approaches of minimalism.
However, Winters' love of drawing and his growing interest in depiction led him to introduce schematic references to biological, astronomical,
or architectural structures as the subject of his paintings. By the early 1980s, these had developed into loose<br /> grids of organic shapes against lushly painted fields.
"Fourteen Etchings" is a masterful collection consisting of 14 copperplate etchings published by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in 1988.
Each of the 14 works was created by juxtaposing an X-ray photograph of part of a human skeleton taken from a 19th-century German anatomy book with an etching based on direct gravure
.
The X-ray photographs begin with the skull and move down the body as the series proceeds, from the chest and arms to the abdomen, pelvis, and lower body, all the way to the feet.
The engraved image on each print does not necessarily have a direct connection with the accompanying X-ray photograph. Strangely enough, however, viewing its abstract depiction together with the concrete image of the X-ray photograph on the same print evokes the sensation of a sort of organic interrelation.
Exuding a boundless tranquility, the works draw on a rich sensibility.
We are also taking this occasion as an opportunity to exhibit "Composite," a lithograph on "washi" which Terry Winters produced when he visited Japan in 2005.
