From February 27 to April 3, 2016, Kido Press is going to hold an exhibition of prints by John Currin, an American artist now based in New York. This exhibition will trace the transition of Currin's printed works with a chronological display of 15 prints he produced over the years 2002 - 2011. Accompanied by commentary on the artist's technique, it is an attempt to highlight the importance of print production in the context of Currin's art.
Apart from those in which his wife Rachel Feinstein serves as the model, Currin draws the inspiration for the women depicted in his works from a wide range of sources, including clippings of photos from decades-old issues of mail-order catalogues and fashion magazines, images from Internet porno sites, and pin-up girls in voluptuous poses. Throughout the history of art, women have been portrayed in ways that symbolize the times of the artist, and these women of Currin's are also closely intertwined with the evolution of the female image in this history. The Currin print titled "Nude on a Table" (2002), for example, is clearly based on his painting of the same title, but critics have pointed out the influence of French Rococo, the Northern Renaissance, and Mannerism in its composition and technique.
The collection of seven prints titled "Milestones" (2006) presents seven images selected from some of Currin's most famous paintings. They are not simple printed reproductions of these paintings; each is the product of the creative act of carefully etching images on the plate anew. At the same time, each plays another role, which is suggested by the title "Milestones." While the word originally referred to a marker for distance traveled along a road, the definition expanded to encompass events or developments that are particularly significant in a life or career. Its use for this collection of prints indicates that Currin has positioned "Milestones" as a retrospective look at his art so far and, indeed, a milestone opus itself in his own history.
Also in the exhibit are prints produced in 2011. Conceived around lowbrow photos of women appearing in the drab sales catalogues of department stores, which were bastions of middle-class American mass consumption, these works are rendered with a delicate and graceful touch calling to mind the prints of no less than Rembrandt. In spite of the clearly kitsch streak, they are endowed with a bizarrely distorted and vaguely decadent beauty that absolutely mesmerizes viewers.
Like enriched cultures from the very essence of his paintings, these prints surely hold vital keys for those who endeavor to navigate the alluring yet chaotic universe of Currin's art.
